History of drumming

When we say the term “drum”, the first thing that comes in our mind is the drum set that we see during rock shows and concerts right? But did you know, that’s just a modern condensed form of many drums to form a single drum? Drums did not just originate overnight. They are traced back to the 3000 BC. Most of the countries used drums at some point or another, some even continue using them not just as the modern day drums but also as their traditional drums.

Drums are called a “Membranophone”. It consists of a hollow cylinder and a membrane stretched over it. They were made from wood, metal and sometimes synthetic materials since different materials possess different sound properties. There are said to be fourteen basic types of drums. They are: Box drum, Frame drum, Friction drum, Bass drum, Two-headed drum, Kettle drum, Jug drum, Hand drum, Snare drum, Slit log drum, Stir drum, Talking drum and Goblet drum. Each of these drums differ in their construction, shape, size and sound produced.

In different parts of the world, different drums are used, and are called by different names. The drums in Africa are: Ashiko, Conga, Djembe, Doumbek, Rik. In Asia, a large variety of drums are mainly from India. Some of the drum varieties from Asia are: Damroo, Dhol, Khamak, Khol, Madal, Mridanga, Naal, Nagah, Pakhawaj, Tabla etc. Bodhran and Tabor are famous European drums, Pow Wow drum and Water drum are famous North American drums, Caixa, Cajon, Cuica etc. are famous south American drums and there are a wide range of middle eastern drums : Bendir, Darbuka etc. to name a few.

Drums served a wide range of purposes during olden days, though these days its only used as a musical instrument. War drums were used as warnings and also to uplift the soldier’s spirits and to give them a rhythm while marching. In some parts of the world, drums played an important role in the spiritual and religious life. They were used as signals between cities or even as a message.

As said before, the drum in use now is a combination of different drums, which was earlier played by different drummers. As it got expensive, people tried to condense it to form a single drum set which could be played by one person. Then came the electric drum which was first invented by Graeme Edge collaborating with the Sussex University professor Brian Groves.
